Typing Test Difficulty Levels

Our typing tests are ranked on level of difficulty. The algorithm to calculate difficulty depends on the average word length and how many special characters like capitals, numbers and symbols are included in the text. Most standard pre-employment typing tests will be in the normal range. You should expect to get higher wpm scores on easier tests and lower wpm scores on the more difficult tests.

How To Calculate Words Per Minute on a Typing Test

When you are trying to figure out your score on a words per minute typing test you need to figure out how many words you have typed, and how long it took to type them.

WPM Speed

To calculate the word count for typed text we use a standard “average” word length of 5 characters. You count all the characters (including spaces) in the text. Then you divide that number by 5 to get a total number of words typed. (Learn more about how word count varies for other applications.)

Next you need to figure out how long it took to type the text. On many tests you are asked to type for a set amount of time. When you are taking a pre-employment typing test, keep in mind that the text selected is too long for most typists to complete in the time given. At The Practice Test we use the actual time it took you to type a selection. Since the computer does the math, we don’t need to limit you to exact minutes.

Adjusted WPM for Accuracy

Another key to scoring a wpm test is accuracy. Traditionally, you count all your errors then divide by the number of minutes. Finally, subtract that number from the raw words per minute score to get an adjusted wpm. This is the score that employers will look at. This adjusted rate estimates time for your to correct your mistakes and is a remnant from the days of manual typewriters. On our tests, we expect you to correct your mistakes as you go (or edit them when you finish) and so our final wpm already includes any time you need to fix errors.

Finally, you divide the number of words by the time it took you to type them. On 1-minute typing tests, this is easy as the score is the same as your word count. For longer tests you will need to do more math. One of the advantages of taking typing tests at ThePracticeTest.com is we do all the math for you. You can just focus on typing quickly and accurately until you have completed the test.
